Manresa

Manresa 320 Village Lane Los Gatos, CA 95030 I have been wanting to go to Manresa for ages. It seems like it’s harder to plan to go to a place just 20 minutes away over our lovely mountain highway than all the way up to San Francisco. I finally realized, Hey! there are hotels near…

Wood oven roasted manila clams with thai basil, crispy pork belly and fresh chilies

The Slanted Door 1 Ferry Building #3 San Francisco, CA 94111 415-861-8032 I had a few errands to run in San Francisco. All food-related so it was worth the drive up. My first stop was Omnivore Books on Food to pick up my signed Alice Waters book that I wasn’t able to get signed in…

I have owed a recipe for this to many people for way too long. So finally here it is. It’s not very specific, it changes with the ingredients in the fridge and the garden, but this will give you the gist. First off, you need a pan that can go in the oven. Metal handle…

How Food Can Be My Religion

There are not many things I believe in as strongly as good food. I believe in, whenever possible, eating locally and organically. I believe in slow food, McDonald’s goes against all my beliefs. My son calls it the “M place, pleh!” and knows we only go there to use the bathroom on road trips! I’m…

Le Bernadin-inspired Salmon and Apples

I went to the store to get the ingredients for this great salmon recipe in my On the Line, Inside the World of Le Bernardin cookbook and, oddly, my fish monger had no salmon! So this went from a Le Bernadin recipe to a Le Bernadin-inspired recipe. This was night two of my exploration of…

Lalime’s  1329 Gilman St. Berkeley, CA 94706 510-527-9838 Lalime’s is a cozy, comfortable restaurant placed right in the middle of a residential area. We thought we were on the wrong street. It’s a small dining room in an old house that seats sixty and is bright and warm. We focused on the appetizers which isn’t…

537 Seabright Ave. Santa Cruz, CA 95060 831-429-1856 The West coast just doesn’t really have good pizza…or I should say it didn’t. I’m a California girl, born and raised, but I’ve had pizza in New York and they know what’s up! I’ve settled for the left coast’s tries at pizza my whole life, therefore I’ve…

Aqua 252 California Street San Francisco, CA 94111 415-956-9662 First off, don’t go to Aqua on a Friday night, especially if you don’t know San Francisco well enough to maneuver through side streets. Traffic was just atrocious! And I’m guessing that if you go on a weeknight it won’t be as crowded and loud in…

23 years so I had these in France and then days la 23 years so I had these in France and then days later in Germany having never seen them before. I fell in love with them and I was told they were called Snow cherries.
They're not. Not by anyone else at least. Except @toriamos who wrote a song called Snow Cherries from France which is crazy.

Many years later I found them at a farmers market and they were called Cape gooseberries. That's what everyone calls them here so I tried planting some. The plant was tiny and sad.. So tiny and sad that our house painters didn't notice them and piled crap on them and they died.

This year I got 2 new plants. I put them in full sun in my raised bed and they grew like crazy!! I have SNOW CHERRIES!

They're yummy 🥰
It's been a long time since I had a dish that trul It's been a long time since I had a dish that truly blew me away with its originality. Of all things that did it this time? Cucumber salad??

The first photo is that salad. Ever gotten brain freeze from a salad? Now I have. The cucumbers were cut like linguine, the herbs were plentiful and the dressing (or extra flavor bomb) was a spicy cucumber granita. It was beautiful, flavorful, unique and amazing.

Every dish was perfect, from the toro on shokupan, to the halibut with pluots, to the HUGE panko breaded pork chop. Every bite sublime....🥰🥰

I'll be back next month!!
