Blackbird 36 State Street Santa Barbara CA 93101 805-882-0135 I was a little concerned about this reservation. I read good things but do I trust the people who wrote those things? Oh, internet. I was worried because of its location. Right on State Street, a block from the beach, tourist central. That doesn’t usually equate…

It’s beginning to taste a lot like Christmas. I don’t make desserts much except when Christmas is approaching. Then we break out all the sugar-filled books and go through pounds…POUNDS…of chocolate. This year’s “menu” includes: Almond Toffee from Bouchon Bakery (The Thomas Keller Library) Chocolate Candied Almonds from Chocolate Obsession: Confections and Treats to Create…

I haven’t been to Atalier Crenn yet. I have to admit, I’m a little intimidated by Dominique! I don’t know what it is but no matter how often people tell me she’s perfectly lovely, I feel like she’d totally kick my ass. BUT, I still want to eat her food, it looks amazing! We had…

500 Hartnell Street Monterey, CA 93940 (831) 643-1833 We’ve been to 1833 many, many times at this point. We started going two chefs ago and each time there is a change at the helm of the kitchen, we get worried. Every time, our worries are unfounded. One thing about 1833 is it’s very dark so…

Mark Bitterman’s latest book, Salt Block Cooking, dropped today, I ordered it immediately. I don’t have it yet but since it’s release day, I thought I’d post this gallery of the last time I saw Mark. My husband was away for a week on business. This happens regularly, it’s not unusual. My son and I have crazy busy schedules…well, he does…and the week flies by. One thing that is really different though is I cook less for that week. We’ll go out or I’ll make some simple pasta. Nothing that I…

You know how I feel about Eric Ripert. He’s probably mentioned more on this site than any other chef. He and Anthony Bourdain came to San Jose on their Good vs. Evil tour and of course I had to go. Even though I had a feeling I’d already seen a lot of the material at…

Snorkeling

We arrived a day early and spent my birthday in the amazing waters of Grand Cayman. We snorkled and swam and snorkeled some more. The water is warm and clear and full of some of the cast of Finding Nemo. It was incredible. I snorkeled in Hawaii many years ago but it was not like…

I got to meet Eric Ripert!

To call this a review would be ludicrous. The meal was perfect. I got to meet Eric Ripert. I was a giddy, squealing ’60s Beatles fan girl. You should have seen me! I maintained for my conversation with him but I was jumping up and down once I got outside. I have met many-a-famous-person. I’m…

Freshly Made and "painted" chocolates

I always very much look forward to Recchiuti events. Michael Recchiuti never ceases to surprise me with the combinations he can come up with. This time was no exception. We started with a classic, homemade graham cracker with a melted chocolate to dip in. Sitting in front of us were 4 glasses for 4 vermouths….

Tonight was not necessarily that. I got leeks, crab and black trumpets from @ocean2table. It's simple but seriously Michelin restaurant-level flavor. I am so stoked on this dinner.

Potato leek soup (so simple: 2lbs leeks, 1 lb potatoes, 5 cups chicken stock. Puree. Finish with salt and lemon juice to taste)

Steamed local dungeness crab, nothing done to it at all. Just crab.

Black trumpets sauteed in butter. That's it.

Soup, crab, mushrooms, drizzle of olive oil, sprinkle of finishing salt.

I will never slap your hand away to take a photo. Enjoying the food is what counts. It's one of the reasons I don't want to be a chef. I want to cook when and what I want, not because I have to. (Plus I love to sleep!)
