I got beautiful ono from my H&H Fresh Fish CSA/CSF and it just made dinner easy. A simple salad with some grated carrot and a bit of cilantro. A dressing of lemon juice, a little orange juice, and a minced garlic clove, salt and good Stonehouse olive oil. I seared the fish with just a…

Yoichi’s 230 E Victoria St Santa Barbara, CA 93101 805-962-6627 The food is amazing. The presentation is beautiful. The staff is wonderful. We ate things I’ve never heard of. We had some favorites. I loved our waitress. I won’t buy Tommy Hilfiger clothes (not like I did before)–nevermind why. Aside from the other clientele, I…

It’s our annual tradition (17 years running) to head to the woods for Thanksgiving weekend and forage for something edible and tasty…preferably porcini but other edibles will do! We didn’t find a ton this year but enough for a nice, large, dinner when we got home. Since this drive takes us north of the Golden…

Yes, I’ve been remiss in my FoodPorn duties. I’ve still been cooking, traveling, eating amazing things but writing has not been happening. Truth is, I’ve just been overcommitted. I took on contract jobs that filled my every waking hour and some of my sleep as well (or lack thereof). So, what’s been up in my…

I woke up Saturday morning knowing I was making dinner for 10 people that night and not knowing what the menu was going to be. It was another gathering of our 1999 crew. I needed to pick up a my monthly box from El Salchichero and decided I would just buy what looked good when…

The much anticipated entry of Jose Andres to his Friday morning demo was not disappointing. Long known at the cookout as the Three Amigos, they arrived in character: Jose, Eric and Tony on horseback with sombreros. They are a hoot. They pulled it off quite well! Jose clambered down and started right into making Pisco…

This year’s weather has not been cooperative. It’s been rainy, or windy, or rainy and windy. There have been some hours of sun here and there. The one saving grace is that it’s not too hot! The trip to Stingray City was cancelled due to swells and choppy water. The Burgers in Paradise was moved…

In 1999 we lived in an amazing 1890s Victorian on the West Side of Santa Cruz. It was 3 stories, full of histories, a ghost and lots of good food. It is where FoodPorn.com was born. We lived with another couple and their daughter (aged 3 when we moved in) and our friend rented the…

This was our third dinner at Manresa. Our first time in the summer. Oddly the other two times we went both fell in April, not sure why. This was the best meal of the three. I don’t know if it was because summer is just full of things I love or if David was just…

Summer Simplicity

The flavors of summer make dinner so simple. I wanted to make the yummy crispy rice again but didn’t want asian flavors so I just started gathering things from my CSA, the farmer’s market and the pantry. I assembled lettuce, sliced peaches, green beans (not in the picture, I forgot them at first!), basil, pan-seared…

White Seabass in ginger broth with crispy rice

This is one of the best fish dishes I’ve ever made and it’s going to be really hard to replicate! Well, the fish and the rice I can easily do again but the only way to do the broth is to have leftover Pho broth again! I made pho one day but didn’t have beef…

Every year we disappear into the woods for a week at my dad’s cabin. Every year the food gets better. We step it up a bit each trip. Crispy Tofu with Noodles

For once I pretty much followed the recipe. This one was from Food & Wine magazine’s recipe of the day newsletter: Crispy Tofu with Noodles. We ate ramen three times over the long weekend. I was a bit porked out. I had veggie tacos for lunch and wanted more vegetarian fare for dinner so it…

Tonight was not necessarily that. I got leeks, crab and black trumpets from @ocean2table. It's simple but seriously Michelin restaurant-level flavor. I am so stoked on this dinner.

Potato leek soup (so simple: 2lbs leeks, 1 lb potatoes, 5 cups chicken stock. Puree. Finish with salt and lemon juice to taste)

Steamed local dungeness crab, nothing done to it at all. Just crab.

Black trumpets sauteed in butter. That's it.

Soup, crab, mushrooms, drizzle of olive oil, sprinkle of finishing salt.
