Palate vs. Ancestry

My geneology may trace back to Scotland and Poland but my tastebuds were imported from Japan. Well, most of them at least. The parts that like salt, raw fish, umami. Then I realize, there’s a part of my tongue from Italy…not the cheese part, that’s definitely the Japanese section my my tastebuds, but the french…

Outstanding in the Field Tables

I was very excited for my first Outstanding in the Field dinner. I tried to get tickets last year and it sold out too quickly, I missed out. This year I booked 3 events to make up for it! I wish I could do more but our calendar is not cooperating with that idea. So,…

Spinach Salad with Lentils and Green Garlic Dressing

This is basically the springtime version of my fall mushroom salad. Subtract chanterelles, add green garlic. Voila! Easy: Spinach…wash it, put it on a plate Lentils…cook them with a clove of garlic and some thyme. Choose your preferred liquid to cook them in, I use chicken stock. Green garlic dressing…recipe featured here. To plate…well, spinach,…

Beef Pho

We’ve been talking about a kitchen remodel since we bought this house 7 years ago. It hasn’t happened for various reasons. In recent months, my old, cheapy-cheap stove we installed when we moved in started going dramatically downhill. It took, I kid you not, 40 minutes to boil a pot of water and that was…

Squid-Farro Salad

My son ordered the most beautiful salad at La Posta on Easter. Farro, pea shoots, pea blossoms and squid. It tasted wonderful but the addition of the pea leaves, shoots and flowers made it so incredibly pretty. The whole meal was wonderful as usual but this dish really stood out.

Such a beautiful color

Turns out we didn’t invent this drink but it sure was amazing! I definitely prefer this to the standard mimosa. Oh, and we had waffles too :)

CSA/Garden Salad

I love the CSA season. I can eat ridiculously healthy with very little effort or thought. When all that is in the fridge is vegetables, lunch or a quick snack is so seasonably delicious whether you try or not! The salad was a mix of lettuces, 2 multicolored carrots thinly sliced and one HUGE radish,…

I was torn between two dishes for dinner. I wanted soba noodle soup but I had all these wonderful CSA veggies to use. So I decided to try introducing two recipes to one another. Turns out they should definitely be friends! I have some of the greens-beef mixture left over today which I’m going to…

2008 Robert Denogent St. Véran les Pommards

As my son pointed out, “Sometimes experiments fail.” Well, luckily, I think this one worked! I had quite a few turnips from my CSA. The only way I’ve ever had turnips is roasted in big chunks and I didn’t like them like that. But I do like thin, crispy starchy things with butter sooooo…. I…

Asian Beef with sauteed greens, shiitake and rice

One night I opened the fridge to find a wilted (but not rotten) 1/2 bunch of cilantro, some ginger and not much else. I had a rib-eye in the freezer. I always have garlic, shallots, onions in the drawer and chiles from my dad’s garden in the freezer. I threw what I had in the…

Steep hill

I don’t cook with an insane amount of cream. I hate cheese. I don’t eat offal. And I wash my mushrooms in WATER…*gasp*! I don’t understand why there is such a problem with mating water with mushrooms. They grow in the RAIN for pete’s sake!! I went for a little walk yesterday. It’s been raining…

Chantrelle and Grant Achatz

Every time we go to Chicago I try to go to Alinea. My in-laws live there so we go at least once a year. Every time, something gets in the way. The first time we had reservations and I got sick, my husband went with his dad and they had an amazing meal. The trips…

I have changed my stance on digital thermometers. I’ve had 2 fail. One all together died and one was reading 10s of degrees low so I overcooked my meat. Good ‘ol analog for me from here on out. I’ve removed the product from my Amazon store as well. Is there a name for a kitchen-luddite?

Chicken

This recipe (if you can call it that, it’s so simple!) was spawned from having too little time and energy to make anything else one night and ended up being a favorite dish in the end! – 1 chicken, cut into 6-8 pieces…I never cook the wings, I save them w/ the back for making…

Fill gyoza wrappers for quick raviolis

Take the leftover chicken meat, I had 2 legs and 1 breast left, and cut it into chunks. Put it in the food processor with some sauteed garlic and shallots, some chopped herbs, salt and pepper. For the amount of chicken I had left I used 2 shallots and 2 cloves of garlic, a tablespoon…

We literally ordered everything on the menu @themi We literally ordered everything on the menu @themidway_s_c last night but the pasta (I mean, we didn't want to overdo it 😂).

The server thought we were joking. Not joking. Ate it all (well, left a few pieces of squash and potato with the halibut, I hit a wall), but it was ALL SO GOOD. Even flipped the table before the 7pm reso coming in after us 🤘

Because of my severe hatred of cheese, olives and peppers,I can't usually do that but the menu accommodated me last night! So much fun.
