C Pam Zhang - The Land of Milk and Honey

Wow, was this book right up my alley!  I admit, I love a good apocalypse story (books and TV), The Last of Us being the most recent that’s tickled my fancy…and gave me a nightmare or two!  Land of Milk and Honey: A Novel takes that love a step further by melding it, blending it,…

My Interview with Brian Viglione

I emailed Brian before they came to the Mountain Winery to play with the Barenaked Ladies. We already had tickets. I’m a life-long Violent Femmes fan, am in awe of Brian’s drumming, and my 11-year-old son’s also a drummer and really needed to see Brian play live. I was pleasantly surprised when Brian wrote back…

Give Me Gin or Give Me Death – My Interview with East Bay Ray

I really wanted to incorporate “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables” into the title of this interview since it’s, well, a food title but could not come up with a spin that was appetizing. So, Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death it is…I’m a dork, I know. Ray and I have mutual friends but we’d…

The much anticipated entry of Jose Andres to his Friday morning demo was not disappointing. Long known at the cookout as the Three Amigos, they arrived in character: Jose, Eric and Tony on horseback with sombreros. They are a hoot. They pulled it off quite well! Jose clambered down and started right into making Pisco…

This year’s weather has not been cooperative. It’s been rainy, or windy, or rainy and windy. There have been some hours of sun here and there. The one saving grace is that it’s not too hot! The trip to Stingray City was cancelled due to swells and choppy water. The Burgers in Paradise was moved…

Three years ago, I was going to San Francisco to see Jason Webley perform. Olga Nunes was going too. A perfect opportunity to interview her! It was rainy and cold. A pretty big storm was coming through. We met at Sushi Groove South with some friends and had plate after plate of sushi. Olga had…

The Fang Tingler

I was approached by the folks at the Blood Kiss Kickstarter campaign to see if I could do something on the site about the movie project. At first I couldn’t figure out how to tie a Film Noir vampire movie into FoodPorn. I thought maybe I could do an interview with someone associated with the…

You know how I feel about Eric Ripert. He’s probably mentioned more on this site than any other chef. He and Anthony Bourdain came to San Jose on their Good vs. Evil tour and of course I had to go. Even though I had a feeling I’d already seen a lot of the material at…

Sleeping in on Sunday morning was a welcome treat. We were on vacation, I didn’t want an alarm but on Saturday we had to catch the catamaran at 9am so we had to drag our butts out of bed (very worth it!!). Brunch on Sunday didn’t start until noon though so no alarm was necessary…

Eric and Tony

Vertigo runs in my family. I’ve always been prone to motion sickness but about six years ago I went on a ferry in Sydney and my head thought it was still on the ferry for about 5 days. I’d be standing in the kitchen pouring a cup of tea and the whole room would spin….

Last year’s epic Cayman Cookout adventure was supposed to be a once in a lifetime, blowout, crazy-idea event. That quickly changed after the 2012 event to trying to figure out how we could do this every year. Not only is the food fantastic, we have a blast as a family doing all sorts of wonderful…

I got to meet Eric Ripert!

In just a few days we’ll be flying back to the Cayman Cookout for year two of the once-in-a-lifetime culinary extravaganza. We justified it last year by it falling on my actual birthday and Eric Ripert being my favorite chef, blah blah blah. This year we found more organs to sell and justified it again…

Dom Perignon 2003

You really can’t knock starting a foggy spring Sunday morning with a glass of 2003 Dom Perignon. I don’t typically drink DP, unless it’s given to me. I don’t think it’s bad champagne by any means but it’s not what I tend to buy. 2003, if you recall, was the year that hundreds of people…

The chefs descend on the competitors

The morning started with sleep! We didn’t have a 10am event, our son didn’t have a 9:30 camp. We got to wake when we woke, slowly get going then walk our son down to the Les Chefs Petits brunch. This was supposed to be the kids making their own brunch in the Seven kitchen. This…

Sunset

The first event of Saturday morning was one I was really looking forward to. Good vs. Evil – Ripert and Bourdain in conversation. I didn’t realize they had a schtick. They interrogate each other in quite the hilarious way. Tony started on Eric, trying to find his weaknesses…trying to embarrass him. Eric seems to blush…

23 years so I had these in France and then days la 23 years so I had these in France and then days later in Germany having never seen them before. I fell in love with them and I was told they were called Snow cherries.
They're not. Not by anyone else at least. Except @toriamos who wrote a song called Snow Cherries from France which is crazy.

Many years later I found them at a farmers market and they were called Cape gooseberries. That's what everyone calls them here so I tried planting some. The plant was tiny and sad.. So tiny and sad that our house painters didn't notice them and piled crap on them and they died.

This year I got 2 new plants. I put them in full sun in my raised bed and they grew like crazy!! I have SNOW CHERRIES!

They're yummy 🥰

The first photo is that salad. Ever gotten brain freeze from a salad? Now I have. The cucumbers were cut like linguine, the herbs were plentiful and the dressing (or extra flavor bomb) was a spicy cucumber granita. It was beautiful, flavorful, unique and amazing.

Every dish was perfect, from the toro on shokupan, to the halibut with pluots, to the HUGE panko breaded pork chop. Every bite sublime....🥰🥰
