Friday began just as it did last year. With the highly anticipated arrival of Jose Andres to his cooking demonstration at 10am. We just had a few bites of fruit for breakfast knowing we would be eating for hours. This may have been a slight mistake since the first thing Jose served was a drink….

Last year’s epic Cayman Cookout adventure was supposed to be a once in a lifetime, blowout, crazy-idea event. That quickly changed after the 2012 event to trying to figure out how we could do this every year. Not only is the food fantastic, we have a blast as a family doing all sorts of wonderful…

The Kitchen – Before and After (almost complete!)

Kitchen After

The thing that always bothers me about renovation shows and before and after pictures are that they always take the after shots from different angles that the before shots. So, I went through mine and stood in the same spot so you could really see the transformation. I have wanted this kitchen for so long!…

Dom Perignon 2003

You really can’t knock starting a foggy spring Sunday morning with a glass of 2003 Dom Perignon. I don’t typically drink DP, unless it’s given to me. I don’t think it’s bad champagne by any means but it’s not what I tend to buy. 2003, if you recall, was the year that hundreds of people…

Abalone with local milk panna cotta

If…I mean when…you go to Manresa, because you should, you’ll get two menus. One is a normal menu with dishes listed with ingredients. The other is an alphabetical list of ingredients for the “seasonal and spontaneous” chef’s tasting menu. You won’t know what will be together, in what dish, in what order, but you will…

The chefs descend on the competitors

The morning started with sleep! We didn’t have a 10am event, our son didn’t have a 9:30 camp. We got to wake when we woke, slowly get going then walk our son down to the Les Chefs Petits brunch. This was supposed to be the kids making their own brunch in the Seven kitchen. This…

Sunset

The first event of Saturday morning was one I was really looking forward to. Good vs. Evil – Ripert and Bourdain in conversation. I didn’t realize they had a schtick. They interrogate each other in quite the hilarious way. Tony started on Eric, trying to find his weaknesses…trying to embarrass him. Eric seems to blush…

Jose Andres with spiny lobster

The first real day of the Cookout began at 10am. As Jose Andres put it, “Who puts a cooking class at 10am?! You start a cooking class at 3pm so you have the day sleep and then do your things…then cook!” But he didn’t seem to be slowed by the early start. As Dana Cowin…

Snorkeling

We arrived a day early and spent my birthday in the amazing waters of Grand Cayman. We snorkled and swam and snorkeled some more. The water is warm and clear and full of some of the cast of Finding Nemo. It was incredible. I snorkeled in Hawaii many years ago but it was not like…

To Bake or Not to Bake?

Pim's next apprentice?

Anyone who knows me or has visited this site…ever…knows my answer to that question. I don’t bake. I hated chemistry. I don’t measure. I don’t plan things in advance enough to let it rise or refrigerate it overnight. I love to cook. I do it by taste and smell and instinct. My husband brews beer…

I got to meet Eric Ripert!

To call this a review would be ludicrous. The meal was perfect. I got to meet Eric Ripert. I was a giddy, squealing ’60s Beatles fan girl. You should have seen me! I maintained for my conversation with him but I was jumping up and down once I got outside. I have met many-a-famous-person. I’m…

Salty Pimp

This is worth a walk to the East Village. And you really should walk a long distance so you also have to walk a long distance back. These ice creams are not dainty little scoops. This is a huge, amusement park-sized, dipped soft serve cone lined and dipped in goodness. I got the wonderfully named…

We spent a rainy but wonderful weekend in Inverness, CA for my dad’s 70th birthday. He loves oysters, as do we, so we stayed near Hog Island Oyster Farm and shucked oysters for two days. Truth be told, my dad did most of the shucking. I got about three open but he was so much…

First batch of rib-eye slices

First things first…this was totally cool and fun!! We actually started discussing putting some sort of exhaust fan over our dining room table so we could do this at the table rather than in the kitchen. Next time we’ll do it outside instead so everyone can participate and cook their own food on the block….

The French Laundry Revisited – With Mark Van Name!

It’s been six years since my first trip to the French Laundry. I’d heard rumors that Thomas Keller had spread himself too thin, opening too many restaurants, too many projects, that the French Laundry had slipped and wasn’t as good as it used to be. I don’t know what these people are talking about!! And…

23 years so I had these in France and then days la 23 years so I had these in France and then days later in Germany having never seen them before. I fell in love with them and I was told they were called Snow cherries.
They're not. Not by anyone else at least. Except @toriamos who wrote a song called Snow Cherries from France which is crazy.

Many years later I found them at a farmers market and they were called Cape gooseberries. That's what everyone calls them here so I tried planting some. The plant was tiny and sad.. So tiny and sad that our house painters didn't notice them and piled crap on them and they died.

This year I got 2 new plants. I put them in full sun in my raised bed and they grew like crazy!! I have SNOW CHERRIES!

They're yummy 🥰

The first photo is that salad. Ever gotten brain freeze from a salad? Now I have. The cucumbers were cut like linguine, the herbs were plentiful and the dressing (or extra flavor bomb) was a spicy cucumber granita. It was beautiful, flavorful, unique and amazing.

Every dish was perfect, from the toro on shokupan, to the halibut with pluots, to the HUGE panko breaded pork chop. Every bite sublime....🥰🥰
