My favorite Outstanding in the Field to attend is the Secret Sea Cove dinner. It’s a popular one. You have to be on it to get tickets and I was…right when they went on sale! The food is awesome of course, the people are really fun to chat and eat with but, for someone who…

Yes, you read correctly…Who puts that in a sandwich?! I went to Epicurious to look for some fancy sandwich ideas. I found a couple of interesting ideas. One was Pressed Coppa Sandwiches with Broccoli Rabe Pesto. Obviously, that’s the one I got the most inspiration from. The other was Broccoli Rabe and Provolone Grinders of…

It’s Beginning to Taste a Lot Like Summer

My CSA boxed has been transforming slowly from hearty greens and lettuces to, well, still hearty greens and lettuces but also strawberries and summer squashes. I don’t dislike zucchini but it’s not something I rush out to buy. I had it now though, and would make something delicious. It’s been hot and I had a…

This is my favorite OITF location. You can’t beat the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and the sandstone cliffs forming the cove. The wind is a bit much but, being from the area, I knew and came prepared. Those who didn’t could borrow blankets which is an excellent plan. I brought many layers that I…

Gazpacho

My dad brought me tomatoes. He seriously grows the sweetest tomatoes I have ever had. When summer starts I begin dreaming of the tomatoes and waiting for them to ripen. I remember how sweet they are and then I get one and I taste it and it’s even sweeter. It’s like my brain can’t contain…

Prepping Salmon

Making food in the garage actually hasn’t been that difficult. I can’t make anything that has to simmer for a long period of time (I’ll run out of propane) or go into an oven larger than the toaster oven, but other than that, it’s been working. I made one of our favorites with my CSA…

Pasta with broccolini, pine nuts, garlic, basil

Everyone’s reaction to me telling them I’m remodeling my kitchen is first, “FINALLY!” and second, “Where are you cooking? When we remodeled our kitchen it was a lot of microwaving.” No way! Not for me! Pasta and broccolini boiled on my camp stove…garlic sauteed and pine nuts browned on the other burner. Topped with fresh…

The first event of the year. Route 1 Farm is just a little way up the coast from Santa Cruz. We left our house when it was sunny and hot. We got 3 blocks from our house and it was socked in fog and freezing. I was numb by the end of the night but…

Soaking Cranberry Beans

I made this soup a couple of month ago for a Soup Night gathering at my house. I had vegetarian friends coming so I simmered veggies in water all morning to make really flavorful stock for the soup. I had some dried cranberry beans from the farmers market in the pantry just screaming to be…

Hearing about fungus

This has been sitting in my drafts since December. *Sigh*. I figured I’d better put this up before the next round of Outstanding the Field tickets go on sale! The previous two OITF dinners were amazing. We went to the first one of the season at Fogline Farm. One mid-season at Everett Family Farm and…

I host a soup night, ideally once a month, but really it happens when we have a free weekend night. I make a huge pot of soup, customized each time for the number of people coming and the allergies/preferences/aversions of the guests. It’s really, really fun and it gives us a way to actually get…

Love love love summer

This week’s box from my CSA is full of so many of my favorite things. Romaine lettuce, Kale, Green Onions, Fennel, Strawberries, Potatoes, Cucumbers. They have an “exchange” box at the pick-up site and I swapped my carrots out for a 2nd head of romaine. I still have a zillion carrots from previous weeks, we…

23 years so I had these in France and then days la 23 years so I had these in France and then days later in Germany having never seen them before. I fell in love with them and I was told they were called Snow cherries.
They're not. Not by anyone else at least. Except @toriamos who wrote a song called Snow Cherries from France which is crazy.

Many years later I found them at a farmers market and they were called Cape gooseberries. That's what everyone calls them here so I tried planting some. The plant was tiny and sad.. So tiny and sad that our house painters didn't notice them and piled crap on them and they died.

This year I got 2 new plants. I put them in full sun in my raised bed and they grew like crazy!! I have SNOW CHERRIES!

They're yummy 🥰

The first photo is that salad. Ever gotten brain freeze from a salad? Now I have. The cucumbers were cut like linguine, the herbs were plentiful and the dressing (or extra flavor bomb) was a spicy cucumber granita. It was beautiful, flavorful, unique and amazing.

Every dish was perfect, from the toro on shokupan, to the halibut with pluots, to the HUGE panko breaded pork chop. Every bite sublime....🥰🥰
