White Seabass in ginger broth with crispy rice

This is one of the best fish dishes I’ve ever made and it’s going to be really hard to replicate! Well, the fish and the rice I can easily do again but the only way to do the broth is to have leftover Pho broth again! I made pho one day but didn’t have beef…

Yes, you read correctly…Who puts that in a sandwich?! I went to Epicurious to look for some fancy sandwich ideas. I found a couple of interesting ideas. One was Pressed Coppa Sandwiches with Broccoli Rabe Pesto. Obviously, that’s the one I got the most inspiration from. The other was Broccoli Rabe and Provolone Grinders of…

The Fang Tingler

I was approached by the folks at the Blood Kiss Kickstarter campaign to see if I could do something on the site about the movie project. At first I couldn’t figure out how to tie a Film Noir vampire movie into FoodPorn. I thought maybe I could do an interview with someone associated with the…

Chicken and Chinese Cabbage Salad

My son said, “I don’t like cabbage.” I said, “It’s not cabbage, it’s slaw.” I like traditional cole slaw but can only eat so much of it. I don’t like cooked cabbage. I’ve been getting cabbage from my CSA so I’ve been experimenting. When I decided to make chicken with the honey-soy glaze I found…

My Cure for Depression

My husband was away for a week on business. This happens regularly, it’s not unusual. My son and I have crazy busy schedules…well, he does…and the week flies by. One thing that is really different though is I cook less for that week. We’ll go out or I’ll make some simple pasta. Nothing that I…

Pork Ribs and Caesar

My husband isn’t a fan of chewing meat off a bone. He was out of town so I thought I’d try out making ribs. I’d never made them before since I too wasn’t a fan of gnawing on bones, but I got over it. My son recently discovered he like chicken wings because you only…

Newsletter Inspiration #6: Japanese Chicken-Scallion Rice Bowl

Honey-soy glazed chicken wings

I thought this recipe from Cooking.com’s newsletter looked tasty, kid-friendly and easy. Well, this was a miss. The broth had too much sugar in it. I made the rookie mistake of not tasting the broth before cooking the chicken in it (or even before ladling it into the bowls). I ate it but it wasn’t…

Blueberry Pancakes

Hey, I didn’t say all the inspirations would be for dinner. I got a Cooking.com newsletter that had a blueberry pancake recipe and I thought, “Sure! Why not?” I usually make waffles. I prefer them actually. But the whole point of this newsletter exercise is to change things up a bit. My eight-year-old helped me…

Italian Wedding Soup

I’ve got a cold. I just got mostly over the flu and got walloped with head congestion. Blargh. So, I want soup. Lots of soup. It just so happened that Food and Wine’s newsletter yesterday had soup! Italian Wedding Soup to be exact. I got my frozen chicken backs from my freezer and got the…

Curried fish and potatoes

I haven’t made Indian food in ages. When my son begs for mac-n-cheese…yes, my child who gobbles up raw oysters, serrano ham and ramen still begs for the one “kid” food he likes…I make him that and make something for my husband and I that I know my kid won’t like. Usually Indian food. I…

Crispy Tofu with Noodles

For once I pretty much followed the recipe. This one was from Food & Wine magazine’s recipe of the day newsletter: Crispy Tofu with Noodles. We ate ramen three times over the long weekend. I was a bit porked out. I had veggie tacos for lunch and wanted more vegetarian fare for dinner so it…

So the SuperBowl recipes are finally over with in the newsletters. Today’s Epicurious recipe of the day was Skillet Chicken Pot Pie with Butternut Squash. Right off the bat I know that I won’t be putting butternut squash in it since my son wouldn’t eat it if I did. Oddly, it’s all he would eat…

Cook the pasta in the sauce for the last minute

My newest adventure is actually grabbing a recipe from one of the bazillion newsletters I get each day and cooking something from it for dinner that night. Tonight was not necessarily that. I got leeks, crab and black trumpets from @ocean2table. It's simple but seriously Michelin restaurant-level flavor. I am so stoked on this dinner.

Potato leek soup (so simple: 2lbs leeks, 1 lb potatoes, 5 cups chicken stock. Puree. Finish with salt and lemon juice to taste)

Steamed local dungeness crab, nothing done to it at all. Just crab.

Black trumpets sauteed in butter. That's it.

Soup, crab, mushrooms, drizzle of olive oil, sprinkle of finishing salt.

I will never slap your hand away to take a photo. Enjoying the food is what counts. It's one of the reasons I don't want to be a chef. I want to cook when and what I want, not because I have to. (Plus I love to sleep!)
