Coi 2.0

The first time we went to Coi in August was a romantic dinner for our 15th wedding anniversary. We were blown away, it was delicious. The GM, Zion, after we were apparently drunkenly bragging about how adventurous of an eater our 10 year old son is, said we should bring him, they would modify the…

Grapefruit Salsa

We had skirt steak…and we had lard. Instantly my mind went to grilling the skirt steak and making flour tortillas. We had all the ingredients for that. What we didn’t have was anything to go *on* the tacos. I forged ahead with the plan anyway while I rummaged through the fridge and cabinets. Here’s what…

Vietnamese Hand Rolls

A couple of weeks ago I was going through my freezer inventory (I finally wrote up a list and keep a clipboard on the chest freezer!) and picked out a whole rockfish to thaw. I pulled out my neighbor, Andrea Nguyen’s, Into the Vietnamese Kitchen and found her recipe for hand rolls. The first night…

1108 Pacific Ave Santa Cruz, CA 95060 (831) 824-6100 assembleforfood.com As soon as it was announced that Assembly was taking reservations, I consulted our calendar and booked. I figured on a Wednesday night, it would be a nice break from the weekly grind, I’d take a night off from cooking dinner, and it would be…

This is less of a recipe than a link to another recipe. I got short ribs from my monthly box of awesome from El Salchichero. It was really only enough for two and that worked out since hubby was away and I was just cooking for my son and I. I basically cooked the short…

Do you ever have one of those meals that you start because those are the ingredients you have in the fridge but end up with something you want to make again and again? This was one of those nights. I had about 1/4lb of top sirloin left over in the freezer from pho one night….

My Cure for Depression

My husband was away for a week on business. This happens regularly, it’s not unusual. My son and I have crazy busy schedules…well, he does…and the week flies by. One thing that is really different though is I cook less for that week. We’ll go out or I’ll make some simple pasta. Nothing that I…

Eric and Tony

Vertigo runs in my family. I’ve always been prone to motion sickness but about six years ago I went on a ferry in Sydney and my head thought it was still on the ferry for about 5 days. I’d be standing in the kitchen pouring a cup of tea and the whole room would spin….

Prepping Salmon

Making food in the garage actually hasn’t been that difficult. I can’t make anything that has to simmer for a long period of time (I’ll run out of propane) or go into an oven larger than the toaster oven, but other than that, it’s been working. I made one of our favorites with my CSA…

I was torn between two dishes for dinner. I wanted soba noodle soup but I had all these wonderful CSA veggies to use. So I decided to try introducing two recipes to one another. Turns out they should definitely be friends! I have some of the greens-beef mixture left over today which I’m going to…

Asian Beef with sauteed greens, shiitake and rice

One night I opened the fridge to find a wilted (but not rotten) 1/2 bunch of cilantro, some ginger and not much else. I had a rib-eye in the freezer. I always have garlic, shallots, onions in the drawer and chiles from my dad’s garden in the freezer. I threw what I had in the…

First batch of rib-eye slices

First things first…this was totally cool and fun!! We actually started discussing putting some sort of exhaust fan over our dining room table so we could do this at the table rather than in the kitchen. Next time we’ll do it outside instead so everyone can participate and cook their own food on the block….

Mixed greens with tomatoes, avocado and bacon

JoLe 1457 Lincoln Avenue Calistoga, CA 94515 707-942-5938 We used to go to Calistoga just about every year. We’d go in February, off-season, rainy, cheaper, but just as tasty and relaxing. Since our son was born six years ago, we’ve only been twice. This trip makes three times. Every time we go, I say, “We…

23 years so I had these in France and then days la 23 years so I had these in France and then days later in Germany having never seen them before. I fell in love with them and I was told they were called Snow cherries.
They're not. Not by anyone else at least. Except @toriamos who wrote a song called Snow Cherries from France which is crazy.

Many years later I found them at a farmers market and they were called Cape gooseberries. That's what everyone calls them here so I tried planting some. The plant was tiny and sad.. So tiny and sad that our house painters didn't notice them and piled crap on them and they died.

This year I got 2 new plants. I put them in full sun in my raised bed and they grew like crazy!! I have SNOW CHERRIES!

They're yummy 🥰

The first photo is that salad. Ever gotten brain freeze from a salad? Now I have. The cucumbers were cut like linguine, the herbs were plentiful and the dressing (or extra flavor bomb) was a spicy cucumber granita. It was beautiful, flavorful, unique and amazing.

Every dish was perfect, from the toro on shokupan, to the halibut with pluots, to the HUGE panko breaded pork chop. Every bite sublime....🥰🥰
