Newsletter Inspiration #6: Japanese Chicken-Scallion Rice Bowl

March 1, 2013

Honey-soy glazed chicken wings

I thought this recipe from Cooking.com’s newsletter looked tasty, kid-friendly and easy. Well, this was a miss. The broth had too much sugar in it. I made the rookie mistake of not tasting the broth before cooking the chicken in it (or even before ladling it into the bowls). I ate it but it wasn’t…

Italian Wedding Soup

I’ve got a cold. I just got mostly over the flu and got walloped with head congestion. Blargh. So, I want soup. Lots of soup. It just so happened that Food and Wine’s newsletter yesterday had soup! Italian Wedding Soup to be exact. I got my frozen chicken backs from my freezer and got the…

Curried fish and potatoes

I haven’t made Indian food in ages. When my son begs for mac-n-cheese…yes, my child who gobbles up raw oysters, serrano ham and ramen still begs for the one “kid” food he likes…I make him that and make something for my husband and I that I know my kid won’t like. Usually Indian food. I…

Crispy Tofu with Noodles

For once I pretty much followed the recipe. This one was from Food & Wine magazine’s recipe of the day newsletter: Crispy Tofu with Noodles. We ate ramen three times over the long weekend. I was a bit porked out. I had veggie tacos for lunch and wanted more vegetarian fare for dinner so it…

Cayman Cookout 2013 – Sunday Brunch

Sleeping in on Sunday morning was a welcome treat. We were on vacation, I didn’t want an alarm but on Saturday we had to catch the catamaran at 9am so we had to drag our butts out of bed (very worth it!!). Brunch on Sunday didn’t start until noon though so no alarm was necessary…

So the SuperBowl recipes are finally over with in the newsletters. Today’s Epicurious recipe of the day was Skillet Chicken Pot Pie with Butternut Squash. Right off the bat I know that I won’t be putting butternut squash in it since my son wouldn’t eat it if I did. Oddly, it’s all he would eat…

Cook the pasta in the sauce for the last minute

My newest adventure is actually grabbing a recipe from one of the bazillion newsletters I get each day and cooking something from it for dinner that night. One night in and I’m already improvising of course. I never follow recipes! The first recipe was from the Epicurious newsletter: Rigatoni with Spicy Calabrese-Style Pork Ragù The…

Eric and Tony

Vertigo runs in my family. I’ve always been prone to motion sickness but about six years ago I went on a ferry in Sydney and my head thought it was still on the ferry for about 5 days. I’d be standing in the kitchen pouring a cup of tea and the whole room would spin….

Friday began just as it did last year. With the highly anticipated arrival of Jose Andres to his cooking demonstration at 10am. We just had a few bites of fruit for breakfast knowing we would be eating for hours. This may have been a slight mistake since the first thing Jose served was a drink….

La Posta is one of my favorite places to eat in Santa Cruz so naturally I picked it for my birthday dinner. I’ve already written it up in the past but I got a new camera and wanted to test it out! And it never hurts to update people on the status of a restaurant….

We had Christmas at about 5 different houses this year. Bouncing from family to friends and back again. We wanted to have Christmas day at our own house though. So since we’d already made the rounds, we extended and invite out to any friends who didn’t have a place to go on Christmas…Christmas Orphans. We…

Way back in June I took a class from Pim (aka Chez Pim) and immediately after the class started remodeling my kitchen and so I couldn’t make the amazing dishes I’d just learned about. Fast forward to the completion of the kitchen and then my husband got in a motorcycle accident. I couldn’t dive into…

Steaming

I picked up Andrea Nguyen’s Asian Dumplings cookbook pretty much on a whim a few months ago. We made way too many dumplings and stuffed ourselves (and our neighbors) silly. Not long after that I saw that she was teaching a dumpling class at Love Apple Farm and had to sign up! This has been…

We had a few leftovers

We drove up to San Francisco and met our friends at the Dumpling King for lunch. They’ve been going there for years, we’d never been. Oddly, we’d never been out for dumplings in San Francisco. Only in Sydney. Yes, we travel 7000 miles for Din Tai Fung. This was so much more convenient! ;-) Needless…

23 years so I had these in France and then days la 23 years so I had these in France and then days later in Germany having never seen them before. I fell in love with them and I was told they were called Snow cherries.
They're not. Not by anyone else at least. Except @toriamos who wrote a song called Snow Cherries from France which is crazy.

Many years later I found them at a farmers market and they were called Cape gooseberries. That's what everyone calls them here so I tried planting some. The plant was tiny and sad.. So tiny and sad that our house painters didn't notice them and piled crap on them and they died.

This year I got 2 new plants. I put them in full sun in my raised bed and they grew like crazy!! I have SNOW CHERRIES!

They're yummy 🥰

The first photo is that salad. Ever gotten brain freeze from a salad? Now I have. The cucumbers were cut like linguine, the herbs were plentiful and the dressing (or extra flavor bomb) was a spicy cucumber granita. It was beautiful, flavorful, unique and amazing.

Every dish was perfect, from the toro on shokupan, to the halibut with pluots, to the HUGE panko breaded pork chop. Every bite sublime....🥰🥰

I'll be back next month!!
